The world expects more...
So the World Champions have gone the same way as England, stuttering to a less-than-convincing 1-0 win. In truth it was quite disappointing, they were predictably panicky in defense, but also rarely found any rhythm or excitement in attack. Had they been playing against a team with more of a clue what to do in the opposition penalty area than Croatia, it could easily have been an embarrassing start for the untouchables.
To sum up I feel like I have been watching Chelsea – they have won without ever really playing that well. Some would say that’s how tournaments are won. I would rather say that we should expect much better from this group of superstars.
ON another note Stefan & I watched Switzerland play out a tense but tactically fascinating draw with France (it could have been even better, had the paint on that post been a few mm thinner…) This also presented one of those interesting club Vs country dilemmas – how would I feel if Louis Saha had scored…? For sure I would have been sleeping outside tonight if I had hinted at the merest satisfaction with that!
So having seen all of the ‘top’ teams in action now (with the exception of Portugal) I must say I fancy the Italians up to now (NO innuendo intended…) Having said that I accept no liability for any money lost as a consequence of Rob’s tips… You play entirely at your own risk.
Anyone want to fight about this? Cileia, how is the mood tonight in the streets of Rio …?
Why can’t every day be a football day…?

they are partying, but they didn't really like the game (see my blog :))... they tend to blame the fat one (ronaldo), the bandido velinho (old criminal cafu(he was charged with something today)) and the two woodlegs (lucio and emerson who lack any brazilian elegance)... there is NOTHING funnier than listening to brazilians bitch about their team, especially ronaldo, poor guy...
early stages. apart from lampard, england didn't look phenomenal either against an average opponent.
the spaniards looked lethal as well but then they too were playing debutantes. I have a feeling the tournament is going to get better and no team out and out impressed just yet.
the italianos looked alright but someone keep a watch out for the dutch.
Didn't know you were that much of an expert when it comes to football, my brother... ;)
woooohoooooo..crouch scores and gerrard returns to form! damn t&t almost had them in trouble though.
and rooney is looking ominous..are u getting goosebumps or what?
Rob I will ignore your comments about Chelsea for now.
Since the 1990 World Cup (when i started to actively watch) England have ALWAYS proclaimed that it was time to bring the trophy 'home'! Italy, USA, France, Korea/Japan. The cup didnt go 'home'.
Now its Germany, England DOES have one of the best midfields in the tournament but the media over-hype does not help the pressure on the team. And they have failed to win convincingly now in two games. Watch out for Ljunberg, Karlsson and Allback, Rob! England havent beaten Sweden in 38 years!
ME? I put my money on Argentina. Messi, Riquelme, Tevaz? Not to mention Crespo? Shiver me timbers!

you should experience the life in ecuador after a victory of the football team! it's incredible!!
see you at IC ;-))
2-2 ladi ...and you know as well as i do that englad were the better team by a long shot. if the english can get their dead ball defense a bit more organized they are going to be the european team to beat.
this one's a classic:
It is just before the England v Brazil match. Ronaldinho goes into the Brazilian changing room to find all his teammates looking a bit glum.
"What's up?" he asks.
"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it's important but it's only England. They're sh*te and we can't be bothered."
Ronaldinho looks at them and says, "Well, I reckon I can beat them by myself-you lads go down the pub."
So Ronaldinho goes out to play England by himself and the rest of the Brazilian team go off for a few jars.
After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the teletext on. A big cheer goes up as the screen reads "Brazil 1 - England 0 ( Ronaldinho 10 minutes)". He is beating England all by himself!
Anyway, a few pints later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers, "It must be full time now, let's see how he got on." They put the teletext on.
"Result from the Stadium 'Brazil 1 (Ronaldinho 10 minutes) - England 1 (Lampard 89 minutes)."
They can't believe it; he has single-handedly got a draw against England !!
They rush back to the Stadium to congratulate Ronaldinho. They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, sitting with his head in his hands.
He refuses to look at them. "I've let you down, I've let you down."
"Don't be daft, you got a draw against England, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very, very end!"
"No, no, I have, I've let you down...I got sent off after 12 minutes."
